Spelling Prefixes


Add the base word or root without any spelling changes

dis + appoint -> disappoint
dis + obey -> disobey

dis + satisfied -> dissatisfied           with + hold -> withhold
un + natural -> unnatural              
mis + spell -> misspell

Prefixes that ADAPT  (adding ‘ad’, ‘con’, ‘in’, ‘ob’, ‘sub’, ‘dis’)


Some prefixes adapt to suit the first letter of the base word or root.

(ad = to/towards)
ad + range -> arrange                      ad + claim -> acclaim                        ad + quire -> acquire
ad + tract -> attract                          ad + nounce -> announce                ad + quit -> acquit
ad + pear -> appear                         ad + sociate -> associate

(con = with/together)                      (in = not)
con + mend -> commend                 in + mortal -> immortal                  in + noble -> unnoble
con + mit -> commit                          in + legal -> illegal                            in + legible -> illegible
con + rupt -> corrupt                        in + responsible -> irresponsible

(ob = against)                                      (sub = under)

(drop one ‘l’)

Rhyme: with ‘suc-‘, ‘ex-‘ and ‘pro-‘, double ‘e’ must go.
